Holy Week + Holiday Pay = Happy Worker

It’s been the 4th year that I am reporting to work during Holy Week season and I am happy to know that President Benigno Aquino III signed the Proclamation No. 84, last December 2010 where in the Philippine Labor Department has issued the pay rules for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (21 and 22  of April 2011).  It is said that these days are regular holidays which was announced by Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) two days after the proclamation was signed.

For those who don’t know yet, in a news release posted on the Labor Department website, Baldoz noted the Holy Week holidays are among Filipinos’ “most cherished and solemn” days.

Thus, she advised employers to ensure that the government’s core labor standards “are properly applied in the country’s workplaces during these days.”

The DOLE said the following pay rules will apply for April 21 and 22 holidays.

If the holiday falls on an employee’s regular workday:
  • If either or both Maundy Thursday or Good Friday are worked, the employee is entitled to 200 percent of his (or her) basic wage on the first eight hours.
  • For work in excess of the eight hours, (he or she is entitled) to an additional 30 percent of his or her hourly rate on the said day.
  • If un-worked, the employee is entitled to 100 percent of the regular daily rate, provided he or she was present, or was on leave with pay, on the workday immediately preceding the holiday. If the day is the employee’s rest day:
  • If the day is worked, the employee is entitled, on the first eight hours, to 200 percent of his or her daily rate plus 30 percent and, for work in excess of eight hours, plus 30 percent and, for work in excess of 8 hours, plus 30 percent of his or her hourly rate on said day.
  • If un-worked, the employee is entitled to 100 percent of his or her regular rate, provided he or she was present, or was on leave with pay, on the workday immediately preceding the holiday. In case the day immediately preceding the holiday is a non-work day in the establishment, or is the scheduled rest day of the employee, the employee shall not be deemed on-leave-of-absence on that day, in which case he or she shall be entitled to the holiday pay.
They provided the following hotline numbers for clarifications, call the DOLE Call Center at hotline 2917 from Globe or TM mobile phones; 908-2917 from fixed-line phones for free; or text (SMS) the DOLE at 2910; or call or visit the appropriate DOLE Regional Offices or dial the Bureau of Working Conditions at trunk line 527-3000, local 302.
Hope this will give you a reason to be happy even though you didn’t celebrate the Lenten Season with your loved ones. Gob Bless Philippines! Mabuhay!
